Rickettsiae are obligate intracellular bacteria; that is, they can grow only within cells. They are the agents of several important diseases, namely typhus, spotted fevers such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Q fever, anaplasmosis, and ehrlichiosis. Rickettsiae form a group of bacterium-like prokaryotes, occurring naturally in tissues of certain arthropods, which can transmit then to mammals where they can produce fatal disease.
