C. Small sporophyte phase and generally parasitic on gametophyte
See Explanation Here
Bryophytes are the simplest group of land plants. Bryophytes show distinct alternation of gametophytic generation with sporophytic generation. Gametophyte generation is dominant and independent.
Sporophyte generation is very small, microscopic and dependent (parasitic) on the gametophyte phase for food. Once fertilisation occurs, the young embryo grows in place, supported by the gametophyte; the sporophyte may not even be capable of photosynthesis, and often is just a stalk with a terminal capsule for spores, attached to the supporting gametophyte.
