Branches of the Internal Iliac Artery
The internal iliac artery divides into an anterior and a posterior trunk near the greater sciatic foramen.
Anterior Trunk
Branches from the anterior trunk supply the pelvic viscera, perineum, gluteal region, and medial compartment of the thigh.
Umbilical artery.
Is usually the first branch off the anterior trunk and ascends out of the pelvis along the internal surface of the anterior abdominal wall to terminate at the umbilicus.
Obturator artery.
Courses along the medial surface of the obturator internus muscle and exits the pelvis through the obturator canal, along with the obturator nerve and vein.
Uterine artery.
In females, the uterine artery courses within the base of the broad ligament, superior to the ureter before reaching the cervix.
This artery is not present in males.
Inferior vesical and vaginal artery.
In males, the inferior vesical artery supplies the bladder, ureter, seminal vesicle, and prostate.
In females, the vaginal artery is the equivalent of the inferior vesical artery in males
Internal pudendal artery.
Exits the pelvis through the greater sciatic foramen, inferior to the piriformis muscle.
Middle rectal artery.
Supplies the rectum and forms anastomoses with the superior rectal artery and the inferior rectal artery
Inferior gluteal artery.
The terminal branch of the anterior division of the internal iliac artery.
Posterior Trunk
Branches from the posterior trunk of the internal iliac artery serve the lower portion of the posterior abdominal and pelvic walls and the gluteal region.
Iliolumbar artery.
Gives rise to branches that supply the posterior portion of the abdominal and pelvic walls.
Lateral sacral artery.
Gives rise to branches that traverse the anterior sacral foramina to supply the posterior sacrum and overlying muscles.
Superior gluteal artery.
The terminal branch of the posterior trunk.
The superior vesical artery is a branch of the umbilical artery, which supplies the bladder and the ductus deferens.
