A
TOXOPLASMOSIS

- Toxoplasmosis is a protozoan infection caused by Toxoplasma gondii, derived mainly from cats (definitive host). Humans and other animals (cattle, sheep and pigs) are intermediate hosts.
- The disease primarily affects central nervous system (brain and retina).
The oocysts of Toxoplasma affect both the retina and choroid to produce a chorioretinitis. It is probable that in infants the primary site is most often the retina which is involved in association with the brain.
