7 ways to avoid distractors for your AIPGMEE success

AIPGMEE preparation without distractions

How to succeed in AIPGMEE by cutting down distractions?

On a typical day with 8 hours to study and near to exams, most candidates end up disappointed because of one reason; They underestimated the power of distractors!. It is not people knocking on your door that is the problem. The biggest challenge is the new set of routines and habits that you have acquired in this digital age. By 10pm it is easy to reflect back and say that a day is not long enough. It is also true that everyone has the same 24 hours in a day. So how does some achieve success in medical PG entrance exams by managing distractions?

7 ways to avoid distractors ruin your medical PG entrance success

  1. It is hard perhaps to switch off your mobile during your protected study time. But just switch it off!! Don’t think twice. Don’t let your mind want someone to rescue you from your study room. You could leave it in silent and check it every 2 hours. Make calls on your terms, not at the expense of your AIPGMEE success!
  2. Delete all ‘Unnecessary’ Apps: Delete all apps on your mobile or tablets, unless it serves an important function to achieve your tasks. 80% of exam candidates interviewed believe that Facebook App is a major distractor. Also delete News Apps. News apps can be addictive. Bye to Instagram, Facebook, candy crush etc. Also see which apps distract you most and just delete them!! It pains. You can always re-download. But resist the temptation to download it again!
  3. Whats WhatsApp Doing To You? What about G2M WhatsApp Chat Park? It is a distraction too. Just mute it and have specified times allocated for group study. Let your friends know when to appear for AIIMS PG exam discussion for example. You could use G2M Smart App to revise or attend mock tests, if it is during the allocated time. It is good to use a laptop whenever possible. It is easier to concentrate longer on a large screen.
  4. Use Browser Add-Ons to block distractions: E.g. LeechBlock for firefox and StayFocusd for Google Chrome are very popular. Self Control for Mac OS X and iPhones are very effective and FREE. This is an effective way of managing distractions for your medical PG preparation.
  5. Turn off the WiFi or internet: This is sometimes achievable but can cause some ‘internet withdrawal’ symptoms. There are Apps and Sites that could manage the internet on your devices without affecting others in your family. You will have to restart the device to get back your internet. This is a good one. Try Freedom for example.
  6. Refine & Filter Emails: Make good use of the email filters in your inbox to redirect non vital emails with minimal educational value. Check emails only at planned intervals. Avoid seeking excitement and surprises in your inbox! It can’t change a lot in 2 hours!!
  7. How to organise away distractors? There are physical distractors like a disorganised study table, magazines, sports, TV and your families expectations. Make sure that everyone knows what you are doing and let the rules be clear. It is best not to refer to your wife or girlfriend or husband as a ‘distractor’ – never a good idea. But you could help them help you. It is good to organise distractors with a time schedule. E.g. 10 minutes of distraction after 1 hour of reading.
